OpenAI is thinking to introduce automated ‘AI Researcher’ by 2028 to make scientific discoveries without human help. CEO Sam Altman and Chief Scientist Jakub Pachocki revealed this plan during a livestream.
Their vision is to create AI systems that can work like human researchers, invent new technologies, and push artificial intelligence towards full autonomy.
OpenAI’s Vision for Automated AI Research
OpenAI’s plan is to make AI capable of independent scientific work. The company believes that artificial intelligence will soon handle complex research tasks with little human input.
By 2026, OpenAI will launch the Automated AI Research Intern tools to speed up research. These tools will guide scientists and students to analyze data and generate reports faster.
Jakub Pachocki shared that the AI intern tools will “meaningfully accelerate” how research is done. A complete version of Automated AI Research will arrive by March 2028.
This version will allow AI to think deeply, design projects, and publish independent research papers.
Pachocki explained that OpenAI’s models already perform five-second, five-minute, and five-hour tasks. Soon, these systems will handle five-month or even five-year projects.
This continuous improvement will bring OpenAI closer to achieving superintelligence and artificial general intelligence (AGI).
Massive Investments and Future Hardware Plans
OpenAI is investing heavily to make this future possible. The company plans to build 30 gigawatts of infrastructure, costing nearly $1.4 trillion.
This investment will power large-scale AI computations required for deep learning and research.
The company has also shifted from a nonprofit to a public benefit corporation. This allows OpenAI to raise more funds for innovation while ensuring safety and transparency.
Its nonprofit foundation still owns 26% of the for-profit unit and will manage ethical research efforts.
Additionally, OpenAI plans to invest $25 billion in AI-driven disease research. This shows its dedication to using artificial intelligence for global good.
Sam Altman also confirmed that OpenAI is building AI-powered devices to make technology portable. These devices will help users “take AI anywhere” with ChatGPT integration.
Agentic Commerce and Global Expansion Plans
Alongside research development, OpenAI is also improving its commercial reach. PayPal has adopted the Agentic Commerce Protocol (ACP) to enable payments within ChatGPT. This allows users to buy products directly from the chatbot.
- US users can now make purchases via PayPal.
- Etsy and Shopify merchants are part of the system.
- Shopify sellers like Skims, Spanx, and Vuori are joining soon.
In India, OpenAI has partnered with NPCI and RazorPay to bring agentic commerce to ChatGPT. The feature will launch soon, making online payments through AI faster and easier for Indian users.
OpenAI is thinking to introduce automated ‘AI Researcher’ by 2028, aiming to make AI truly independent. With massive investments, new hardware, and global partnerships, OpenAI is building the future of intelligent automation.
Its upcoming AI researcher may not only support humans but also discover and innovate like one, changing the world of technology forever.
