
We all use WhatsApp, but do you also face the problem that photos, videos and audio files are downloaded automatically without your consent? The result? Your phone’s storage gets filled up quickly and many unwanted media files get accumulated in the phone.
What is WhatsApp Automatic Media Download
WhatsApp has a default setting that automatically downloads any sent photo, video, document, or audio and saves it to your gallery or file manager. This feature can prove useful at times, but in most cases it fills up the phone storage and slows down the device due to unwanted files.
How to stop automatic media download on WhatsApp
1. Open WhatsApp Settings
First of all, open your WhatsApp app and tap on the three dots (⋮) on the top right. Then select the Settings option.
2. Select the “Storage and Data” option
Now you will find the option of Storage and Data, click on it.
3. Go to the “Media auto-download” section
Here you will see three different options –
- While using mobile data
- When connected to Wi-Fi
- While roaming
4. Prevent media from being saved in the gallery
If you do not want WhatsApp media files to be saved in your gallery, then follow the steps given below –
- Go to Settings.
- Tap on the Chat option.
- Here you will find an option named “Media Visibility”, turn it off.
- Now no photo or video will be automatically saved to your gallery.
5. Turn off automatic download for a specific chat
If you want to turn off this setting only for a specific chat, then –
- Open that chat or group.
- Tap on the chat name (contact or group info).
- Click on the Media Visibility option.
- Select “No” and press OK.
