Sometimes social media may be overwhelming. If you want to take a break from Instagram, you have two options: temporarily deactivate your account or permanently delete it. While deactivating your account allows you to return at any moment, deleting it means you will lose everything permanently. Let us go over both processes step by step.

Temporarily Deactivate

Deactivating your account hides your profile, images, likes, and comments until you log in again. This is an excellent approach to take a break without losing any data. However, this method only works for accounts that do not utilize Facebook as a login. If yours does, you need to unlink it first.

Steps for Deactivating Instagram on Web Browser

  1. Open Instagram.com in a web browser and sign in.
  2. Select your Profile from the left-hand menu.
  3. Choose Edit Profile at the top.
  4. Click See More in the Accounts Center.
  5. Navigate to Personal Details > Account Ownership and Control.
  6. Choose Deactivation or deletion, then choose the account you want to deactivate.
  7. Click Deactivate Account, then Continue.
  8. Enter your password when prompted and select a reason for deactivation.
  9. Click the Deactivate account button to confirm.

Steps to Deactivate

  1. Open the Instagram app and tap your Profile picture (bottom right).
  2. Tap the three horizontal lines (menu icon).
  3. Select Accounts Center > Personal details > Account ownership and control.
  4. Choose Deactivation or deletion, then select the account.
  5. Tap Deactivate account > Continue, enter your password, and choose a reason.
  6. Confirm by selecting Deactivate account.
  7. If you ever want to return, simply log back in, and everything will be restored!

Permanently Delete

If you are certain you will not use Instagram again, deleting your account will destroy everything—your photographs, followers, and even your username (which may be used by someone else).

Steps to Delete Instagram from Web Browser

  1. Visit the Instagram Delete Your Account page.
  2. If you are not logged in, please sign in first.
  3. Select a reason for canceling your account.
  4. Enter your password to confirm.
  5. Click Delete [Your Username].
