If your iPhone’s battery drains quickly or mobile data runs out quickly, there may be one big reason for this – Background App Refresh. Your phone constantly updates apps in the background, which not only drains the battery quickly but also consumes data.
What is Background App Refresh
- The iPhone’s Background App Refresh feature allows even closed apps to stay updated in the background.
- Meaning if you open a news app and then close it, that app will still keep bringing new news in the background.
- Have you ever wondered how notifications come even without opening the app? Yes, this is its magic.
- But as smart as this feature seems, it can also become an enemy of battery and data.
Benefits of turning it off
- Battery life increases
- Mobile data consumption reduces
- Phone performance becomes slightly faster
- Activity of unnecessary apps is blocked
How to turn it off
Step 1: Open your iPhone’s Settings app.
Step 2: Scroll down in Settings and click on “General”.
Step 3: Under General, you will find the “Background App Refresh” option – tap on it.
Step 4: You will now see three options:

Step 5: If you want only some important apps to work in the background and not others – you can go to Settings > App name > Turn off Background App Refresh.
