Android 16 Beta 1 was just released by Google on Friday, and already there is a lot of excitement about it! Developers and fans can now get a preview of the next major edition of Google’s smartphone operating system with the new upgrade. In contrast to other years, Android 16 is anticipated to be made available in Q2 2024, a few months before Google’s customary Q3 or Q4 release dates.

New Features

Live updates are one of Android 16 Beta 1’s most notable features. With the help of this function, real-time notifications will show the status of ongoing tasks, such as food delivery or navigating Google Maps.

The ability for apps to display personalized icons for these progress indicators is what distinguishes this feature and makes it simpler for users to monitor the advancement of their tasks.

Another major update is the predictive back animation. In earlier Android versions, this was only available for gesture-based navigation. With Android 16, Google has extended this feature to the 3-button navigation mode. Now, users will see a preview of the app they are about to navigate to when they press the back button.

Camera & Video

Additionally, Android 16 promises notable advancements in camera capability. Up to 8K video recording, multi-view video, HDR10 and HDR10+ support, and even perceptually lossless video quality are all made possible by Android 16’s support for the Advanced Professional Video (APV) codec.

Compatible Devices

Android 16 Beta 1 is currently available for download on a variety of recent Google Pixel devices and the Google Pixel Tablet for those who are keen to give it a try. The following devices are compatible with the beta:
